Inlays and onlays are dental restorations designed to fulfil a similar function to fillings and crowns. In cases where a simple filling won’t suffice – either because the surface area is too large, or a prior filling has unfortunately failed – we might recommend an inlay. Like fillings, inlays fill in cavities or holes in the teeth, but they are first made at a dental laboratory and then placed here in the practice.
Onlays perform a similar function to crowns but do not require as much of the natural tooth to be removed during the application process. This makes them a much more minimally invasive option, helping us to retain as much of the natural structure of the tooth as possible. Like crowns, they are designed to repair the cusp of the tooth – that is part of the tooth that is most clearly visible – and like inlays they too are most commonly made off-site before being placed here at the practice.
